HURTIGRUTEN USA ADDS INCENTIVES TO WAVE SEASON OPPORTUNITIES

Hurtigruten, celebrating its 120th year of Norwegian coastal life, is continuing to raise the bar on its sale efforts – first with the release of the highly-regarded PBS-aired documentary, A Norway Passage: The Most Beautiful Voyage, and now with the announcement of a new travel agent contest: the 120-Year Anniversary Celebration Gala. Every 2013 Coastal Voyage booking, whether six, seven or 12 days in length, entitles the booking travel agent an entry into the 17-week contest. Weekly winners win $120 VISA gift cards, while the grand prize winner in the final drawing, held July 2, which is the actual day of the 120th year anniversary of Hurtigruten. The grand prize winner will receive the newest iPad with retina display. Runners-up getting iPad minis, featuring 7.9 inch screen and iSight camera. Weekly non-winning entries are carried over every week – so the more bookings, the more entries. To be eligible, bookings must be paid in full for 2013 departures.

The year-long celebrations of Hurtigruten’s incredible milestone makes 2013 the year to sell. Special anniversary items and activities on all departures begin in the spring and the 11 sailings from Bergen from June 21 through July 1 (anniversary date is July 2, 1893) will be special 120-year anniversary sailings. These sailings will offer new excursions, a new dinner menu inspired by food styles of 1893, sailing the just added Lyngen fjord, folk music on board, midnight activities, concerts, fresh shrimp tastings on board, and anniversary souvenir items in the gift shops.

The 120th year also brings a host of interesting statistics regarding the incredible growth of the line. In 2011, Hurtigruten carried 404,000 guests on 1,105,792 cruise nights on a global basis. It becomes even more remarkable when you take into account the fact that the company has only 12 ships, spanning in size from 153 to 640 berths. On these small ships, it’s all about the view – and the ability for guests to become a part of the overall experience. Each ship in the Hurtigruten fleet offers countless opportunities to view incredible surroundings from lounges, decks, and seats both indoors and out.

Voyages along the west coast of Norway, from Bergen to Kirkenes, offer passengers a unique combination of history, culture and incredible vistas. In addition, Hurtigruten runs voyages in Europe and to some of the most remote corners of the world, including the Arctic’s Spitsbergen (home to polar bears), Greenland and Antarctica. Hurtigruten ensures that guests have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of the region they’re visiting, whether that’s witnessing the Northern Lights from a snowmobile or dogsled or having the unique opportunity to spend the night camping on the “White Continent,” Antarctica.

Hurtigruten is a world leader in expedition voyages, sailing to the most remote of destinations, including Antarctica, Greenland and the Arctic’s Spitsbergen as well as year round along Norway’s coast and Europe in the spring and fall. The company’s fleet of 12 intimate ships, which each carry 100 to 646 guests, allows travelers to enjoy the scenery and culture of the destination in a relaxed atmosphere.
